At a meeting of its regulation and compliance committee earlier this week, the SRA revealed that there has been a 49% increase in the number of solicitors and other individuals referred to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT).
We discussed the news with Michael Black, lead compliance consultant within Complu, as part of our '60 seconds with...' feature for this week's newsletter:
Michael, what do you think about the SRA's revelation?
The biggest surprise was that no reason was given for such a sharp increase! The lack of context to this statistic reinforces the point made by my colleague, Martina Hogg, in an article written late last year that with statistics alone it is difficult to conduct any meaningful analysis.
Another point worth mentioning is that the SRA at the same time revealed that 'referral fees' feature on the regulator's list of emerging risks for 2015/16. We had a suspicion that the dust had not quite settled since LASPO and would urge any firms with concerns to speak to us before the SRA speaks to them!
